As I waddle through the last weeks of pregnancy, my thoughts have now turned to what I’ll wear in the first 3-6months post natal. As I put this capsule together, I looked back to my post natal days more than 3 years ago and the thoughts that came to mind are:

1. Comfort in this humid, 30 degree plus climate.

2. Ease of breastfeeding.

3. Coverage of post natal tummy.

4. Relaxed easy clothes for mommy & baby group.

5. Budget as I will be hoping to buy some fab new clothes when I slim down.

6. What I can use from my current wardrobe.

Set 1 is a wrap dress which I can dress up or down. This will be great for breastfeeding as I can just pull down neckline and my tummy is still covered. It would also be lovely for a dinner out in the evening once date night resumes again:)

Set 2 above is actually a nursing top with 2 layers. I bought several of these in dark colours early in my pregnancy and I have made great use out of them and expect to get several months postpartum also. Pants is one of my maternity pants that fit under bump with draw string so this will work well until I lose some weight.

Set 3 is a draped top to camouflage tummy and a stretchy denim skirt.

Set 4 is a scoop neck T (Good quality ribbed cotton that holds its shape) and draped pants for a relaxed coffee with other new moms or just lounging around the house (I can always dream:))

Set 5 is a sleeveless top, which is great for breastfeeding. While not ideal for the big busted, you can get some with built in support. A pair of shorts is essential here in Singapore and I will be getting use out of a couple of maternity pairs that I got early in the pregnancy.

Don’t for get that all the tops will mix and match with the bottoms and to add accessories for some variety and style. I find bangles and necklaces the easiest with a small baby/ toddler.

Essential items – A beautiful practical scarf for more coverage when breastfeeding and a bandeau top to layer under tops that you pull down for breastfeeding so wobbly tummy is not exposed. Invest in a good quality stylish baby bag as this will be with you for at least 2 years after baby.

Option B

After posting my previous article, a long time friend and client of mine asked about choosing glasses based on faceshape. As she rightly asserted, faceshape can be very difficult to define and there are huge variations depending on placement and size of facial features as well as colouring. There is a lot of help out there and there are many websites offering options of trying different styles on your photo. One I tried, can be found at http://www.glasses4eyes.co.uk/virtual_mirror.php

Just upload your photo and off you go.

I tried a couple and I would love your opinion, which do you prefer on me Option A or B ?

As I advance in my pregnancy and get bigger by the day, I have found that the following tips keep me comfortable and looking my best. I wish I had known them first time around:

1. At around 4 months, I strongly recommend that you go through your wardrobe and remove any items that you will not be using for the next 9 months or so. Pack them away in a separate wardrobe until you are back to your old size again. This allows you to see your usable wardrobe and any gaps. For instance, I found that I had a lot of useful bottoms but really lacked in tops that I could mix and match with them.

2. Friends are a lifesaver during the maternity period and no doubt you will get several bags of maternity wear from them. The first time around I did my best to get use out of them but didn’t end up feeling great a lot of the time as they just didn’t jive with my style personality. This time round, I choose their basic items that I could wear in my way and avoided anything that just wasn’t me.

3. When buying, choose basic items in neutral colours that you can mix and match and dress up with accessories. You will get mighty sick of prints and bright colours that you end up wearing week after week.

4. If you are well endowed on top or your thighs rub together (I know, not the most glamorous but it happens to the best of us!), then use talc powder to keep the area dry and irritation free. It’s an old-fashioned trick but works like a dream. Try and find a non scented powder and avoid a baby smelling variety:) Wash your hands after use so you don’t get talc all over your clothes.

5. Lots of maternity bottoms come with maternity bands but many don’t stay up very well. I have found that putting a separate bando that’s slightly tighter over the waist band works really well and I don’t have to keep tugging up my pants all day.

I would love to hear what works for you or what has worked for you so please do leave me a comment with your ideas.

Here’s to 4 months more of relative comfort!

Characteristics of the type:

Waist is 10 inches smaller than shoulders & hips

Shoulder and hips are relatively as wide as each other

Bottom and thighs are curved and weight gain tends to be in these area’s

Bust tends to be on larger size

Dressing A Classic Hourglass:

The key with this silhouette is the wear close fitting clothes in drapeable fabrics e.g. knits, jersey, wool etc. Linens and crisper fabrics do not work with this curvier figure type as they add bulk and make the hourglass body look heavier and boxier.

The classic hourglass has many options with skirts and can carry off pencil, straight and flared skirts as she has a nicely sloped line from her wasit to her low hip.

For pants and jeans, straight to bootcut tends to work best to balance the curvier thighs and bottom but if you see these as an asset and want to highlight those great curves then try a skinny leg.

The waist is very well defined on this figure type so be sure to highlight it with fitted waist hugging styles and belts. Wrap dresses and fitted tops, jackets and dresses are great.

For shoes, you may have to go for a slightly chunkier heel to balance heavier calves and thighs. Try platforms, wedges and styles thicker straps.

Open necklines tens to work best especially if bust is on the large size – Try V necks, U necks and other open necklines.

Celebrity Examples of the Classic Hourglass: Fergie, Halle Berry

I’m heading off to Ireland for my holiday’s in mid December so I put together a maternity capsule (am going to be 5months by then:))

I want to survive the cold and look stylish at the same time. I will be attending my brothers wedding so I put in a teal blue maternity dress that is also very comfortable. I am relying on accessories to add a pop of colour and some fun to outfits as we have a 30kg limit on baggage into Ireland. I would love to hear what you would add or how your capsule would be different.

The lovely Quratulain posed the following query to me so I though I would get some colour in as well as answer her question on coats/ jackets that suit a petite rectangle shape.

“Dear Aileen,

I saw the H shape rescue package… on website - thanks. Its getting to be winter here what kind of coat would suit?

As its an investment don’t want to buy it till i know what i should be looking out for…”

So here are my suggestions:

Winter Colour by aileenlane featuring a red hat

Petites tend to look best in coats that are not too long so mid thigh is a good length for a long coat.

Short jackets are great as they tend to work best with a petite figure.

As a rectangle asymmetrical cuts work well to give shape. Notice that the closing is at an angle and sleek so as not to overwhelm your figure.

Notice the angular collars which will draw eyes out at the bust and above giving a more defined waist.

Hats & scarfs are a great way to add colour and interest to a classic design and to keep you current.
